How to Choose the Right Cinco de Mayo Clothing

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday, which people celebrate with food, drink, music, and fun along with friends and family. No matter whether you're attending a parade or hosting a Cinco de Mayo party at your own home, you may want to take the festive nature of the day up a notch or two by making your fiesta a costume party of sorts by having everyone dress up in Cinco de Mayo clothing.

Wearing special outfits for Cinco de Mayo is more common than you may think; in Mexico's Puebla state and in Mexico City, there are groups of people who dress up in historically accurate French and Mexican military uniforms and re-enact the May 5th, 1862 Battle of Puebla. Of course, you do not have to go to quite such great lengths yourself, but if you and a group of friends can find some uniforms, which are close enough to the right look, dressing as 1860s Mexican or French soldiers makes for a great Cinco de Mayo clothing choice.

However, you do not have to go with this theme for your Cinco de Mayo party. It is also great fun to dress up in something a little more casual, like traditional old Mexican clothing like sombreros, serapes, and cowboy boots. Women can also adopt this look, but they have some other choices, such as a white off the shoulder blouse, long, colorful skirt, and sandals. Another option is the style of dress worn by Mexican folk dancers - this is a particularly popular choice of Cinco de Mayo clothing.

Other people choose to go with a lighthearted, even comical outfit for Cinco de Mayo. Costume shops and novelty stores often carry humorous costumes for Cinco de Mayo around this time of year - while they are not the most tasteful thing in the world, there are options like an adult-size cactus costume or even a taco or margarita costume! If you would like to add a touch of humor to the holiday, this is another choice to consider.

There are yet other Cinco de Mayo clothing options to think about which are a bit more restrained than dressing up as Mexican food or even as a historically accurate Mexican or French soldier. In any city with a sizeable Mexican-American population, there are likely to be multiple clothing shops, which cater to the community, which offer some more casual clothing options. You could go with Mexican-style western wear like cowboy hats and western shirts, guayabera shirts or colorful dresses.

Whether you choose a wild costume, a traditional outfit, or something more modern, there are a lot of great Cinco de Mayo clothing options out there. Even if you do not end up dressing up for the holiday at all, you are sure to have a wonderful time celebrating our friendly neighbors to the south.
