Types of Special Desserts for Different Mexican Holidays and Festivals

Some Mexican holidays have their own associated food and Mexican desserts but, for others, the women gather in their kitchens and make their family's favorite kinds of delicious Mexican dessert recipes and other foods.

Festive Cakes and Cookies

Rosca del Reyes, or Three Kings Bread, is made in late December for January 6, which is Kings' Day. This is a wreath-shaped loaf, which is decorated with mango, cherries, lemon and figs. A baby Jesus doll is baked in the loaf and whoever finds it in their slice has to bake the food for Candlemas, which is on February 2.

Biscochitos are often seen during the holiday season and these little biscuits are flavored with anise seeds and sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. They are normally shaped like a fleur-de-lis but can be oval or round as well. The original recipe was Spanish but biscochitos are popular in Mexico too.

Mexican wedding cookies and Mexican wedding cakes are Mexican holiday favorites and not just for weddings either. Tres leches cake, or three milk cake, is another very popular holiday cake. This cake is made with three different kinds of milk.

Pan dulce is a sweet Mexican rolls and these can be handmade or bought freshly in Mexican bakeries. Pan dulce is like a donut and they are a festive addition to your holiday menu, going especially well with a hot cup of coffee. Pan dulce is sometimes decorated with colored sugar sprinkles.

Tamales come in both savory and sweet varieties and these are usually made only a few times a year in big batches because they are time consuming to make. Steaming hot tamales are unwrapped like little gifts and they are associated with Mexican holidays.

Drinks for the Mexican Holidays

Atole is a thick egg and milk drink, which is served for any meal on a Mexican holiday. It is filling and rich. Atole is sweetened with cinnamon and brown sugar and topped with fruit, making it more of a dessert than a drink.

Champurrado is a famous Mexican hot chocolate drink. Rompope is a thick, frothy drink, which is flavored with cinnamon, almonds, and rum.

Tasty Mexican Puddings

Arroz con leche, which is a thick, tasty Mexican rice pudding is one of the nicest Mexican dessert recipes to make. It is flavored with condensed milk and cinnamon and served hot with butter. This makes a delicious dessert or a flavorful breakfast and is especially good on a chilly morning.

Capirotada is a rich Mexican bread pudding with pecans, apples, raisins, and cinnamon. A brown sugar syrup called a piloncillo sweetens the dish, along with whipped cream.

Mexican flan is always popular, no matter which Mexican holiday is being celebrated, and flan variations include coffee, chocolate, coconut or fruit flavors. Classic vanilla flan is always well loved too.

They key thing about Mexican holidays is that they are meant for enjoyment as well as to commemorate an event. Whatever your favorite Mexican dessert dishes are, you can make those to enjoy and share.
